• Charley Allen says he saw him in 1898 when he was about 5 years old. He came out to Oklahoma when S.T. Allen's wife died, and they took Aunt Laura back to Kentucky with them. His wife was a little short woman. Charley says he was a big tall raw boned man about the size of Joe Allen, Charleys brother. He said he had a long, grey beard then. He remembers that be came to their place and Uncle Jake needed a horse castrated, and J.J. knew hoe, and they went out behind the barn and used willow shotgs to tie the horse down while they operated.

  Aunt Lulu said the size of his farm was about 57 acres (near Hodgenville) and he had this large family to support. He had to work out as a barrel maker (cooper). He was called to go to the Union Army, but he had a large family, so Horace Allen went in his place.
