• HORACE ALLEN
    • He was S.T. Allen's uncle. It is a well known fact he killed Quantrell in 1864. Grandad took me and Jay to the place in Kentucky where the episode took place. Horace and Quantrell were on horseback. They went in to a wooded area and I think they shot it out with pistols. He shot Quantrell in the stomach and they took him to Louisville in a buggy. He was in terrible pain and would scream when the buggy would hit a bump. He died in a day or two.

According to Charley Allen, there was a bounty on Quantrell. Horace went to the army in the place of his brother, who had a large family and Horace had no family. Horace and Kilpatrick were the only men from a round Hodgenville who went to the Union Army. The rest of the men were on the Confederate side. When they came back, Kelpatrick hid out in the hills and Horace laid low. One day he was at J.J. Allen's place and six men on horseback came after him. He was in the house and got out his pistol and told John to let them in, and he hid behind the stove. John told the men to come on in, but they suspicioned something, and got on their horses and left. Horace probably would have killed several of the, if they had come in, for he was a pretty tough man. It seems as though Horace realized that feeling was so strong against him, that he left LaRue county and moved to Washington county Ohio and settled down there and married and had a family. It is rumored that he killed a man in a saloon there. Uncle Jake went there to visit him when he was 9 years old.
